Gibson Caldwell Elementary
Our after school garden club goals are for our kids to learn about basic gardening and nutrition, to conserve natural resources, practice ecology, experience the concept of community gardening and to take pride showing others their great work in the gardens. The after school gardening program will assist 80 children in improving their science scores as demonstrated by MAP and STARR standardized tests. Students as well as the community will benefit from organic gardening. This includes using compost instead of chemical fertilizers, planting flowers with vegetables to attract important pollinators and insect eaters so our harvest will be bountiful. A majority of our students come from poverty and lack access to appropriate nutritional food items and knowledge of environmental stewardship. Students improve their environmental and nutritional attitudes through community gardening which are passed to their parents and community. The principle is simple, kids who grow kale, eat kale. This program is supported by Collin County Master Gardeners.
