About the Program:

Since December of 2013, the GMSS Garden has received grants from the Gahanna Jefferson Education Foundation, The Bob Toopes Show Your Class 5K, and Whole Foods’ Whole Kids program totalling over $5,000. The garden space includes over 20 beds for vegetables and herbs. A bed for blueberry bushes and wildflowers native to Ohio has been added. Additionally, benches and a large work table are being installed to create an outdoor classroom space.

In our first season we provided some of our produce, including tomatoes and peppers to be served in the school cafeteria. This garden gives students the opportunity to learn in a hands-on way where their food comes from and gain the skills and confidence to grow it themselves. Additionally, it will teach our students and the Gahanna community about healthy eating habits. This is truly a unique learning opportunity for our students.

Members of the GMSS Garden Club along with school staff and interested community members are responsible for the planting, harvesting and maintenance of the garden throughout the year.
