About the Program:

Advancing literacy by providing the opportunity to experiment with new foods, new skills, and new ideas.

The Free Library of Philadelphia understands that literacy is not a “one size fits all” experience. Opening in June 2014, the Culinary Literacy Center (CLC) is revolutionizing the way Philadelphians think about food, nutrition and literacy. People become literate through multiple different pathways—and food is one pathway we all have in common.

The CLC is a commercial-grade kitchen that serves as an interactive classroom space. We teach nutrition and health literacy, math, reading, and consumer skills. Nourishing Literacy is the CLC's program that invites students K-12 in to learn about food by getting hands-on. Our team includes a food educator, a children's librarian, and culinary literacy specialist. We have collaborated with local schools to provide this curriculum-based series of programs. By partnering with a fresh food hub, we introduce students to locally grown produce.

Everyone approaches the kitchen with a different perspective and background. With that in mind, Nourishing Literacy is striving to provide a fresh approach to cooking.
