Food For Thought

Program Type:
School Cafeterias
Grade Level/Age Group:
Upper Elementary, Lower Elementary, Kindergarten
About the Program:

Food for Thought provides students with a federally reimbursed breakfast “in the classroom.” In each participating school, breakfasts are delivered directly to the classroom, where students and teachers spend the first 10 minutes of the school day eating breakfast together. During these 10 minutes of communal time, teachers can take attendance, lead students through a focused activity on health and wellness, and build a familial learning community. Working with teachers, the LA Fund and District will package with individual breakfasts, grade appropriate instructional materials to enhance learning. As part of the District-wide roll out of Food for Thought, the LA Fund and LAUSD will continue to build a more diverse and nutritious menu of breakfast items for students. A comprehensive program, each participating school will receive the following: extensive staff professional development and support to ensure implementation; branded campaign materials (banners, posters, flyers, etc) to create a school-wide culture around health; a curriculum guide and materials; classroom clean up kits; mobile food storage units; student breakfast monitor uniforms; and of course, healthy breakfasts for all students!
