Escuela Del Sol Montessori
February, 2015. At last! It is here. Thanks to WKF, we now have a 360-gallon rain "barrel" to supply 4 of our raised garden boxes and the nearby trees. We were promptly blessed with a half an inch of rain, which filled our container completely!!! Since we are predicted to have our fifth year of drought, we are super grateful to get our spring seedlings off to a good start with clean and nutritious rain water!
April, 2014. Our most pressing need for the garden at Escuela del Sol Montessori is increased water harvesting. In the desert, sustainability is contingent on the availability of water. Our next garden goal is to capture more water from the roofs and make better use of collected water by redirecting run-off to various mixed-use garden areas.
Maria Montessori expressed a vision in which children develop awareness and skills to collaboratively steward the Earth and create a peaceful environment, one that is in accord with Nature's patterns and Universal laws. Montessori's curriculum leads children to the shared understanding and deep appreciation of their worlds--and their role in contributing to ever-lasting beauty.
Escuela's Outdoor Classroom is becoming an environment congruent with Montessori's vision. The property niches are filling with materials to support childrens' awareness and embrace of the natural world. Our demonstration of care and stewardship is an important teaching tool for our leaders-in-training and for our neighbors who interact with our campus regularly through outreach programming and public events.
