About the Program:

The Growing Place at our school is growing healthy bodies, minds and greens through interdisciplinary classwork outdoors. This learning garden includes a stage with seating for 2-3 classes at a time, raised beds, and a Woolly Wall hanging garden next to our supply shed. Our mission is to cultivate curiosity about nature's processes while building a practical foundation for a healthy lifestyle.

Whole Food's contribution of a greenhouse will allow us to advance this mission so that we can grow enough organic vegetables for salad snacks for all of our students, and teach them the basics of gardening and preparing this food at home.

Hurricane Ike hit our city 4 years ago and changed the face of our school, but the families we serve are still struggling to get food on the table. Teaching our community how to grow organically may be the key to shifting families away from an impoverished fast-food lifestyle to wholesome growth, in their lives and their children, of which they can be proud.
