About the Program:

The goal of this garden is to help feed the Refugee stuents attending DACS and their families. The State of GA is one the states designated as a resetllment area for Refugees. Clarkston GA is the town most Refugees are resettled due to public transporation, climate, low housing cost and job opportunities. Over 100 different languages are spoken in this town. Clarkston is dubbed the Ellis Island of the South. It's the most diverse town in the US. Currently, approximately 10,000 Refugees residing in this town. Approximately 71% of the Refugees are female and children who are survivors of civil wars, religious conflicts, ethnic cleaning, rapes, tortures and other atroscities. With such varied religious, ethnic and cultural backgrounds it's difficult for the school system to meet their educational needs. Friends of Refugees providing Education and Empowerment(F.R.E.E)-www.freerefugees.org sponsors 37 children to attend private schools outside of their community. Thirty three(33) of these students attend Duluth Adventist Christian School (DACS). These Refugee families do not have the financial means to contribute toward students education. Most days the children come to school hungry. Once the school was made aware of this situation, plans were made to provide breakfast, lunch and evening snack. Our Chef prepares extra food at lunch time which is sent home with the children for dinner. The garden will help us supplement the food need to prepare meals for these hungry children.
