About the Program:

The mission of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School Garden is to create a lifelong learning opportunity for our students; growing food, caring for it, and sharing surplus. This grant will help us increase student learning and improve teaching by extending the classroom to include the outdoors. Students will be active partners and key stakeholders in the intellectual, emotional, physical and social growth that comes from the maintenance of the garden.

The goal of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School Garden is to introduce students to gardening, sustainable food practices, ecology, and biological cycles. By creating an edible garden we can encourage health and build lifelong skills our students will use to help create a more sustainable future. This grant will make it possible for us to fund the construction of our school garden. Specifically we hope to use the funds to build at least six wooden raised beds and install a rainwater harvesting system to irrigate the garden.
