About the Program:

The Delta School is located in the Midsouth, in the Mississippi Delta.  Agriculture and cotton guided our history. In the field, through the Wilson Gardens, and with our school’s farm as classroom program, agriculture continues to shape our future.

We serve students from a variety of economic and cultural backgrounds.  The mean income is well below the poverty line, which proves limiting. The school and community strive to provide ample opportunity for healthy and fresh food choices.  We also aim to teach sustainable practices for growing, preparing, and loving healthy and delicious food.

All levels of learners participate in the school garden initiative which teaches students essential life skills and supports academic learning through hands-on classes in an organic garden. Our ultimate goal is to fully integrate garden lessons into the school day. We teach our students how their choices about food affect their health, the environment, and their communities.  Students use the garden to learn topics such as photosynthesis, weather patterns, biology, earth science, and nutrition.  We are financially supported by both the school's Board of Trustees and the community's developers in our goal of organic agriculture being accessible and taught progressively to the youth in Northeast Arkansas.
