About the Program:

Del Valle High School is a Title I Public School, which is located in a food desert. Students and their families have limited access to fresh foods, and a majority of our student body qualifies for free and reduced lunch. The Cardinal Garden will be one small, but solid, step towards awareness of organic, sustainable gardening in Central Texas. The garden will bring several student groups together with a common interest and purpose. The DVHS SHOC (Students Helping Our Community) Club will build and help maintain the garden. The Culinary Arts Program will help determine which vegetables and herbs will be planted and will later use the garden harvests in culinary lessons and creations. Furthermore, the Cardinal Garden will inspire students and their families to seek means to local, organic gardening and food supplies. Our garden will be be used as a hands-on learning center that provides students with lasting knowledge of best gardening practices that can be transferred to home gardens. Students will become acquainted with organic and sustainable gardening from seed to table through the Cardinal Garden experience.
