The school garden will serve as an outdoor classroom and living laboratory that will provide unique learning opportunities for students across the curriculum, including: science, math, language arts, environmental studies, health, and nutrition. Interdisciplinary approaches foster the talents and skills of all students while enriching the students' capacities of observation and thinking.
Children who live in city suburbs located in a desert climate have limited experiences with gardening and growing produce. This grant will make it possible for 780 students to visit the garden and get hands-on experience learning how to cultivate nutritious and organic vegetables. Students will also learn how to utilize crops to promote healthy nutrition in their daily meals. Throughout this program, we would love to see our students growing and harvesting their own fruits and vegetable, and eating their rewards in a nutritious meal.
The main goal of the garden will be to teach students healthy eating practices through growing whole and organic foods. In addition, we plan to teach students organic gardening practices that will help sustain our garden; such as: mulching and composting.
