About the Program:

Our goal is to purchase a greenhouse for our students. The students will grow seedlings in the greenhouse and transplant them to the garden beds at school as well as take them home to grow in their own family gardens. The students will gain a firsthand experience with the "Farm to Fork" message because they will have an opportunity to grow seedlings, transplant and then harvest their own crops. We will be incorporating the value of eating nutritious meals into our everyday lives. This will be an extremely valuable learning experience because of the high population of low socio-economic status of students in our classrooms. This grant will help us educate and give our students an opportunity to grow their own crops thus we will be able to stress the importance of maintaining and living a healthy lifestyle by making good eating choices. This opportunity will help our students experience being a farmer and be able to take home healthy and good tasting food for their family. Ultimately, we want this greenhouse and the classroom garden to encourage our students to create their own gardens at home or in a community garden. Through the garden project the students will learn to work as a team, learn patience, and discipline. They will learn the value of following directions. It will be a continuing project where they will see the results of their hard work. The FFA school program will benefit from the fund raising sale of the produce as well as build the confidence of the students who grow the produce.
