The Community School
Our goal is to develop soil research plots so students can experience hands-on science in the garden. Our school was established on an old farm, where the topsoil had been sold by the previous farmers. Last year students tested the soil in the area where we plan to establish the study plots and found absolutely zero nitrates, phosphates, and the texture of the soil was pure sand.
Although the school has operated a no-till organic farm and CSA, the farm has not been used significantly for science curriculum. We will use this grant to establish 10 study plots for student research into the best organic methods to improve the soil. Students will design and conduct their own research, and communicate the results in a public forum.
Since the initial tests last year, students have discussed different methods to test, including earthworms, fungal mycelia, and cover crops. The grant will provide construction materials, garden supplies, and scientific test equipment and supplies
