Obesity rates are currently on the rise in America, especially for African American and Latino individuals. With the demographics of our school being predominantly African American and Latino, our goal is to make a conscious effort to reduce this rate. One of the efforts is providing our students the access to a garden space that exposes and educates them about fresh healthy whole foods. Our goal is to increase participation in the garden program and connect our kids to food while simultaneously reinforcing and engaging participants in healthy living strategies. The space is used as an outdoor classroom that supports grade level curriculum and nutrition education. We want to get more students and staff involved this year. Some of the projects that we will be working on for the upcoming year include:
•Weekly classes held in garden
•Vegetable and fruit garden expansion
•Dual language, interactive signage
•Continued partnership with the Young Ladies and Gentleman’s clubs
