About the Program:

Classroom in Bloom's mission is to deepen the connection between people and the land through school and community gardening

Each fall and spring over 450 students learn, work, cook and snack in our 3/4-acre educational garden. We grow 1,500-2,400 pounds of produce for our school cafeterias each year. Our program serves the diverse students of the Methow Valley School District in rural north-central WA. With 48% of our students on free or reduced lunch, many families cannot afford to provide healthful food choices at home. Throughout this region, we face frightening public health issues related to diseases intensified by poor diet and lack of exercise. We believe that all children should be exposed to healthful foods and fun physical activity throughout childhood.

We offer garden-based education where students visit the garden each week in season and receive classroom visits during the winter. We provide hands-on experiential learning that gives our students a multi-sensory experience in the garden, as well as contextualized academic learning in science, math, social studies, art, and language arts. Students develop a positive relationship with engaging work and a taste for diverse fresh fruits and vegetables.

Sow it, grow it, eat it, know it!
