About the Program:

The City Schoolyard Garden was founded in 2009, its mission being to cultivate academic achievement, health, and environmental stewardship through garden-based learning. The local community of Charlottesville, Va. has embraced the project with many in-kind and financial donations. The principal of the middle school on whose grounds the garden is located has also given us his full support, adding that the garden is one of Buford's greatest assets.

Operating under the fiscal sponsorship of the Local Food Hub, and in partnership with the teachers and administration at Buford Middle School, the City Schoolyard Garden program is guided by a board of directors, a full-time garden educator, and a part-time program director. The program operates two after school programs in gardening and cooking, as well as developing curricular resources for teachers to use in classroom instruction.
