chiloquin school garden project
Chiloquin Elementry School is a small rural town in the Klamath basin of southern Oregon. we are 30 miles away from any grocery stores and orgainc produce. The school garden project was formed because there is a great need for food security here. We have started composting saving 15 to 17 gallons of food a day from the garbage and sink disposal as well as established 2 acres at the school to use for growing food and planting native plants . We are said to live in one of the poorest counties in Oregon. Chiloquin is the homelands of the Klamath tribal peoples. Tribal students make up half the populations in the schools of Chiloquin. As recent as 40 years ago most of our food came from the lakes and marshes, now 2/3 of the basins wetlads have been dryed up for bad agriculture practices here in the basin, which has left our people with out our traditional staple foods. With water wars only expected to get worse, we need a solution for all residents of the basin, moreover we need to teach our youth how to grow food with less water and no chemical fertilizers or pesticides to ensure there will be water for the next 7 generations to come.
