The Children's Center
A registered horticultural therapist runs the garden program at The Children's Center. The program goal is to use the cultivation of plants and garden activities to improve the mental, physical and social health of its students. Our garden provides an accessible space outdoors where the children, from age 18 months to age eleven can fully participate in the growing process. Raised beds bring vegetables, herbs and flowers within reach of our students. We incorporate the garden fully into the school's curriculum. If that was all we did, we would be successful. But at our school, our children face many unique physical challenges. While our children are tending the garden, they are also practicing their fine motor skills, increasing their standing balance, and experiencing success in a safe and nurturing environment. We are growing strength, confidence and self-esteem right along side of our broccoli and kale! The grant money will provide us funds to replenish our soil, increase the both the diversity and space of our outdoor classroom and provide tools and books for the students to use. Most importantly, the grant will allow us to spend more time focusing on our students and less time fund raising.
