About the Program:

The goal of our garden project is to make a difference in the lives of our students, their families, and the community. We had hoped to provide a level playing field for all of the students in our school where all children, regardless of academic ability, social status, and ethnic background are equal and plan to do this for years to come. We will be continuing to grow fresh produce for those in need while introducing and expanding our students understanding of nutrition and healthy eating habits. Our future goals include the installation of high tunnels, as well as more raised beds that will bridge the gap and help to provide an opportunity for high school students. Edible gardens have a long history of benefits to students and community members and have been able to provide a meaningful bridge between the two. One only needs to look on the internet to see how these types of programs cross not only curricular lines but cultural and economic boundaries. A garden initiative incorporates the National Standards for Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences in a number of areas including Career, Community, and Family Connections; Nutrition, Food, and Wellness; and Student Organization Integration.
