Carrabec High School Garden Project
Here at Carrabec High in rural North Anson , Maine, AmeriCorps is working to establish a healthy relationship between students, food and the land. We understand that the opportunity that working with fresh and healthy produce in an environment of hard work and holistic living can provide a great space for community building. Through the AIMS HIGH ( AmeriCorps Invests in Maine Students Helping Inspire Growth & Hope) LearningWorks AmeriCorps division, Carrabec has a greenhouse currently under construction for an aquaponics set up, as well as an existing 600 sq. foot bed that provided squash and tomatoes last year to students and faculty. A new 3 year crop plan has been constructed for an additional 3 beds as well as an herb garden, a seating area and rain collection barrels.
A Horticulture program is being designed for alternative education students to receive hands on experience for non-traditional learning pathways to meet core standards. A plan is being devised to connect the life skills students with local farmers markets to sell goods, gain experience and boost the independece as well as overall well being of students lives.
