About the Program:

The Carbondale Community School (CCS) Learning Garden and club began in spring, 2014. Carbondale Community School is a K-8 public charter school with 135 students. The mission of the learning garden is to create and maintain a school garden that provides a place for discovery, to improve health and well-being, and nurture a connection to the Earth for studens, their families and the Carbondale community.  In two growing seasons we have created a potato and garlic patch, root and herb garden, raspberry and strawberry patches, a pollinator garden, kitchen compost and worm bin, and a sunflower spiral.  In the fall of 2015, all 135 students in K-8 classes were in the learning garden tasting, observing, making garden maps, participating in scavenger hunts, and learning how to save seeds.  Students in K-6 classes all planned a lunch menu around what was available in the garden and prepped and cooked a fundraiser lunch.
