Canfield Elementary School
The grant will help us build an Outdoor Kitchen in our gardens to improve our nutrition lessons. Students will:
*Cook with food from the garden
*Participate in cooking lessons with local chefs
*Learn healthy recipes to share with their families
We have two Learning Gardens for our diverse student body of nearly 400 kids-A Kinder Garden and the Garden of Eatin' for grades 1-5. The gardens are creative, magical spots in our urban city. In the gardens, we:
*work together
*get dirty
*watch caterpillars turn into butterflies
*discover new foods
*eat more fresh fruits and veggies
*learn healthy eating tips
We also donate surplus produce to a nearby food bank so our neighbors benefit from the gardens too.
The Gardens are versatile outdoor, hands-on classrooms. Students are in the gardens weekly learning about:
*Food sources
*Composting
*Plant life-cycles and
*Weather patterns
Math lessons are linked to the garden, students keep garden journals, read, and do art projects in the garden too.
