Buttonwillow Elementary
In the spring of 2014 we began our outdoor learning classroom on a vacant lot on our school campus. With the support of parents, students, faculty, and community members we turned a vacant lot into a garden space that includes 10 raised beds and and enough space for 6 in-ground rows, each 30 feet long. We have supplied two garden sheds with tools and equipment. During the summer 9 of our teachers attended extensive workshops to develop knowledge and understanding of implementing gardening and nutrition into their classrooms. In addition, an enrichment class has been formed for grades Middle School in the area of health and nutrition. In addition to two mobile kitchen carts that will be utilized in classrooms, one separate classroom has been formed and contains two full kitchens. Students, grades K-8, will participate in both the garden experience and age appropriate health and nutrition instruction.
