About the Program:

Fortunately, Raising Rochester allows for an incredible educational tool for the students that also gives back to the community. Equally important, these two components make up our two main goals. The first goal being to allow the students to receive hands on experience from start to finish of each gardening season. The garden will help teach healthy living concepts and important life skills to the students. These life skills will teach the school to use bio-sustainable organic methods to allow us to give back to the community by sharing the harvest with those in need in our area which is our second goal.

The goal of asking for five raised gardens would allow our school to host 160 square feet of gardens on our campus. Those five beds would be enough to feed 4-5 adults/teens or 9 children. A minimum of 50% of the garden goes to the local food pantries, which would feed 2-3 adults/teens and 4-5 children. If we donated 70% of the garden directly to the local food pantries it would feed 3 adults/teens or 6 children. A maximum of 35% goes back to Raising Rochester to sell the harvest to support the building and maintenance of the beds. Last year Raising Rochester sold 25-30% of the harvest at local Farmers Markets which created $1600 and allowed for eight more beds to be created.
