Blessed Sacrament Catholic School
The goal is to integrate gardening into all classrooms across the curriculum including teaching about organic & heirloom vegetables. Another goal of the coordinator is to make the garden self-sustaining. During this 2nd year, we would like to see a mulching program begin, use of 3-bin compost system to use cafeteria waste, worm bins added, and most importantly to expand the garden from its current 40'x10' section to almost double in size, 80' x 15'. Eventually, we would like to add a mini greenhouse to the campus. This year, we would like to expand who is involved in working the garden from just the Girl Scouts to students in our day care program, participants in summer camp, school families, teachers and students, and parishioners. This grant will make it possible to increase the area of the garden, to purchase materials necessary to build the compost and worm bins, and to provide classroom supplies for student participation. It is our goal to have every student at the school plant something in the garden. It is our belief that if a student plants and cultivates, they will eat what was grown! We are also planning on starting a gardening club to keep parents and parishioners active in the project.
