About the Program:

The goal of the Battle Academy rooftop garden is to educate students in real world gardening skills, give them opportunities to learn about preparing and eating healthy food, and contributing to the good of our school community by adding to the school yard and landscape of the garden. The garden itself was created to be a learning space for all student Kindergarten, Lower Elementary, at Battle but the garden club was created so students could play a larger role in our school community.

In biweekly meetings, garden club will meet to maintain the garden and have an extended school day based on Science and Math content standards for third grade in Tennessee. The grant will fund both the vegetables we plant, the food we prepare, and expanding our garden to have more raised beds than it currently does. The garden has so much potential as not only a space for learning gardening, math and science as it relates to the state curriculum, but also as a place where students can write, tell stories, or celebrate their learning.

Funds are needed to not just maintain this part of our school, but to grow it so that it can be better used by more teachers and students.
