Slow Food Councillor for Ireland, Darina Allen has been running an innovative ‘Grow and Cook’ programme at Ballymaloe Cookery School since 2005 to teach local school kids how to produce and cook their own food. Here she describes the programme in more detail.
“We are delighted to work with local primary school teachers to turn available land into living classrooms. I’ve always been a firm believer in the idea that if we can teach our children the joys of producing, cooking and eating their own food, we are instilling them with lifeskills every bit as valuable as reading, writing and arithmetic.
East Cork Slow Food launched an educational ‘Grow and Cook’ project with four local schools in 2005. The number has now increased to nine with several others on a waiting list.
