About the Program:

We are Brooklyn Apple Garden Group.  A community based organization started by two sisters concern about the downward decline in their neighborhood.  These concerns included food justice issues and health and wellness issues, neglect and the insurgent of gentrification and its impact on communities of color.  We are introducing healthier lifestyles at the most optimal point of entry:  the future (of change) - the children.  They will take it home and talk to their parents about it hopefully with so much vigor that the parents will pass it on to their friends, neighbors & relatives. They will keep it going if we could just ignite the sparks.  I have also commandeered, through a common interest, the Food Services/Cafeteria Supervisor who just happened to be a farmer.  Go figure!  He has agreed to partner with me in writing a proposal to incorporate the garden program dishes into the lunch menus and in finding funding to get a portion of the school roof enclosed for year round growing of fresh fruits, veggies & even flowers (edible & non-edibles).  The Principal is also very supportive as is the Custodian in charge. We have also added a new school for this upcoming Spring 2017 and a new Lot to come into play next Spring.  I love what I do.  I think it is important. I think it is part of the Lifecycle and that in working with the students in this way will enhance and perhaps/hopefully open up lock doorways to STEM learning and may be even helping them on their SAT exam (thru the intro of Latin plant names but most of all to reinforce working together, fostering teamwork/building skills, United for a better tomorrow. Besides the kids love when it when we engage in a garden lesson together.

This is what WE believe and this is what WE are about. Truly
