Archbishop Howard School at St. Rose
Archbishop Howard School (AHS) in collaboration with multiple community partners, wants to create a garden and greenspace landscaping in its new Covered Playground and Outdoor Learning Center Project. The project is designed to build community and contribute to a sustainable neighborhood. The AHS community, which has demonstrated a long history of action and commitment to environmental stewardship, healthy living and community building, took its most significant step toward creating a more sustainable school and community, when it raised funds and developed a Covered Playground area (completed in November 2011). The AHS project is an ambitious and innovative program designed to ensure that youth and families at AHS, in the Rose City neighborhood, and the broader community have access to outdoor learning, community gathering and recreational opportunities. The project is also designed to improve childhood learning and health through a whole systems approach to wellness. Areas of focus include cafeteria and school food environment, integrating garden-based and nutrition education into the classroom, and access to gardens and local destination farms.
