About the Program:

Aprende Grows is an after-school gardening club that empowers students who want to design, build, plant, harvest, and sustain an on-campus garden. Our initial goal was to build a functional garden. During our first year as a club, we were able to map out a blueprint for fourteen 4x4 planter boxes. From there, we installed a watering system and built the planter boxes. Year two, our goal swiched to researching our environment and determining what seeds to plant. It was a year of trial and error as we worked through various issues that came up as we put the garden to use for the first time. This year, our garden was finally fully functional, so our goal became harvesting and educating others about food. So far, we have harvested over fifteen different crops, which we shared with the teachers and students on campus. We have also created and tested easy recipes using the ingredients we grow to share with our families. The garden has also become a living learning opportunity for our science and social studies classes. We hope to continue sharing our crops with our community and positively impacting those around us with our garden.
