About the Program:

Weston Public Schools (WPS) Food Service Department is committed to providing nourishing food to help fuel our students for excellence. We seek to provide the best quality food that supports good environment practices and the local economy. Local sourcing was the first priority in our farm to school program. For local produce we work with ORFoodEx, a distribution company that carries exclusively local food. As a costal state, we also procure fresh local seafood from Red’s Best. Much of our ground beef is sourced the award winning Spring Brook Farm just 20 miles down the road. We also serve fresh handmade hamburgers from B.good, a small local burger chain committed to supporting local farmers and elevating the quality of quick-service food.

In school year 2012/13 WPS Food Service launched a new “Taste Test Tuesday” program. We conducted 26 taste tests that resulted in over 3,000 students provided feedback on the foods. This was accomplished with the support of 234 volunteer hours. Across the district we sampled everything from kale chips to persimmons and pomelos to apples. This program has been integral to improving students’ willingness to try and accept new foods served as a part of the Health Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010.

The district is situated in a heavily forested area that was historically agricultural. Three of the five schools in the district have gardens that are used for class instruction or afterschool programs. Additionally, WPS maintains a decades-long relationship with Land’s Sake Farm to enrich students’ learning experience through farm visits, GIS mapping, maple sugaring, and forestry.
