About the Program:

Green School is an international school in Bali, Indonesia, with approximately 300 students in Pre-K through Grade 12. These include fee-paying students from 40 countries and other parts of Indonesia, along with local Balinese children who attend via a scholarship program. Our commitment to sustainable practices earned us the Center for Green Schools at the US Green Building Council's innagural award as the “Greenest School on Earth”.

As much as possible, lessons at Green School are applied in hands-on ways that have a connection to the natural world. The goal is to provide students with the skills to be effective and successful competitors in an ever-shrinking global economy while at the same time inspiring them to become more environmentally responsible citizens of a fragile planet.

All of this takes place on one of the most beautiful campuses in the world, where virtually every aspect is designed to be as environmentally sustainable as possible. Extraordinary bamboo structures rise out of the jungle; most buildings lack walls and windows, allowing for natural ventilation and light. Toilets are composting, and all around the school are permaculture gardens growing a wide array of rice, fruits, vegetables, and medicinal herbs. Green School produces most of its own electricity through renewable energy: solar, bio-gas and micro-hydro. The campus also features a breeding project for Bali Starlings, a local endangered bird species.

Students learn in this environment, but also from it. Some grades plant and harvest rice as they study the role of rice in Bali’s history and culture; others help to care for the Starlings and have launched social media campaigns to raise awareness and funds for their protection. In the process, we believe we are creating a new form of education that is engaging and meaningful, and more relevant to the needs of the 21st Century, without sacrificing essential academic skills and content.

Green School features gardens virtually everywhere on the 20 acre campus that is not a path or a building. In addition to the classroom vegetable gardens, maintained by the students, the students also plant their own rice fields. The majority of the school's lunch food is grown on campus by expert farmers who work closely with the kitchen staff. Hundreds of visitors from around the world come to Green School every week to see this amazing living example of sustainabilty in education.
