According to Joseph N. DiVencenzo Jr.,Essex County Executive, "The Essex County Vocational Technical High Schools of Technology offer our students a dynamic, first-class education that will provide them with the foundation for a successful future."  In September 2018, Essex County School of Technology Donald M. Payne, Sr. Tech will open its doors as a new school.  This new home will feature a state of the art greenhouse and green roof that will house hydroponics and container gardening.  Students will grow Jersey fresh produce on a harvest of the month schedule and collaborate with culinary students to cook and bake recipes to serve to students, staff and patrons of the culinary restaurant.  The district program serves students in grades 9 through 12 with a demographic of 50% black and 50% hispanic.

The CTE curriculum offers vast opportunities for students to learn a trade and practice crucial skills through structured learning experiences, apprenticeships, and work study opportunities. As part of the educational program, students are also afforded the opportunity to participate in dual credit programs and qualify for industry recognized certifications through specialized assessments.  These opportunies allow student to think critically in real life situations and circumstances in our environment.  In turn, they are able to respond accordingly to issues such as food insecurity and food advocacy. The following is a district pedagogy:
