IDEA Edinburg
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Edinburg RGV proposes to create a Garden to Table Culinary Art Program designed to provide hands-on opportunities for students to learn about sustainable living practices. Club members & their families will become experienced in gardening and will be active in the harvest, composting and recycling of much of the foods used in the program. The seeds planted and harvested by those participating in Horticulture will be passed on to those club members who are in the Culinary program. The Culinary participants, through healthy cooking demos coupled with nutrition instruction will then create healthy & nutritious meals for club members and their parents. The program will also include occasional farmer’s market visits and an annual Harvest Day celebration. The Garden to Table Culinary Art Program will offer wraparound services and support to youth who have experienced multiple interruptions in traditional school placements. The program will be open to all youth but will target at risk youth/ teens ages 10-18.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Edinburg RGV and Idea School are neighboring facilities, they participate in a partnership. As such, the garden will be placed in a prime area used by both the school and the Club and highly visible to the community and parents. Not only will the club member receive instruction on subjects like gardening skills, nutrition, and entomology. The school and the club can also use the garden as an outdoor learning center to reinforced mathematics, science and art.
