Whidby Elementary is a health science magnet school. Gardening, nutrition, and health is part of the school culture and curriculum! Urban Harvest is partnered to help grow the school community garden and outdoor classroom. The grant would make it possible to have a greatly needed garden shed and to expand the garden! To grow the school gardens, Whidby needs adequate and secure storage for garden tools and outdoor cooking materials. In order to grow and expand the garden programming to the next level, secure storage, would allow greater capacity to meet the needs of additional classes and families to engage and take part in the school garden. Currently, tools are stored in classrooms and all classes share four raised garden beds. Urban Harvest partners to have weekly classes and annual garden events for teachers, students, and families. All classes share four raised garden beds. The school would like to expand the school garden for each Kindergarten class to adopt it's own garden bed.
