Sunflower Elementary School

The goal for our garden is enable the students of Sunflower Elementary, and Boys & Girls Club at Sunflower, to gain knowledge about gardening as well as healthy cooking and eating. At Sunflower, there are 220 students who qualify for free or reduced lunches and breakfasts. Even though they get two meals at school a significant amount will not get dinner or food over the weekends. The food produced from the garden will be able to be sent home with families who need the supplemental food. Along with providing tangible products, we will also be providing nutrition lessons so each student understands the value of eating fresh vegetable and herbs. The mission of Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. By receiving this grant, we will be able to fulfill our mission and make sure that our youth hold the knowledge and skill to independently grow their food.
