Slackwood Elementary School
We believe planting a new school garden at Slackwood Elementary School is a wonderful way to use our playground as a classroom, connect students with the outside world and the true source of their food, and teach them valuable gardening and agriculture concepts and skills that integrate with several subjects, including math, science, art, health and physical education, and social studies, as well as teach them about personal and social responsibility. Specifically, our goals are to:
(1) By planting this garden, we are giving our students a hands-on lesson in nutrition. Our students will recognize the importance of making nutritious food choices like fruits and vegetables.
(2) Give our students a sense of accomplishment in being involved in a project from start to finish, one that will continue on once they have left the school for new students to enjoy.
(3) Complement the learning in the classroom; for instance math lessons on configuring measurements for the garden
