Sir Wilfred Grenfell Elementary School
The school garden provides a green space; increases access to healthy, fresh, local food in a low-income neighborhood; provides a healthy activity for children to engage around during recess and lunch break; and has been the focal point for food, garden, and environmental-focused education for the past several years, mainly through a partnership with SPEC in which an experienced garden educator delivers lessons to the classrooms. This grant would allow the continuity of the school garden program. SPEC has just developed a school garden curriculum package with 9 lessons, including posters and activities related to garden care and ecology, and composting. With this grant, we would be able to train and support the teachers as they become familiar with this curriculum package so that they can integrate it into their classroom curriculum on their own in the future.
