About the Program:

The school garden provides a green space in a very built up area of the city; increases access to healthy, fresh, local food; and provides a space for caregivers and children to engage in a healthy manner. The school garden has been the focal point for food, garden, and environmental-focused education for the past several years, mainly through a partnership with SPEC in which an experienced garden educator delivers lessons to the classrooms. The source of funding that has supported this partnership has been allocated to another cause this year, so the program is on hold and at risk of being discontinued. This grant would allow the continuity of the school garden program. SPEC has just developed a school garden curriculum package with 9 lessons. With this grant, we would be able to train and support the teachers as they become familiar with this curriculum package so that they can integrate it into their classroom curriculum by themselves in the future.
