About the Program:

The highly diverse student population at Bonnabel High School reflects Louisiana’s poor national ranking in all health indicators: obesity, diabetes and hypertension. The Student Wellness Council is highly motivated to help alleviate the problem of obesity through promotion of exercise, healthy nutrition and preventative health behaviors through a garden project. The garden grant will make it possible to maintain our garden through the purchase of equipment, plants, soil and mulch.
The goals of our GUMBO GARDEN are to:
1. Promote healthy behaviors and vegetable intake as means to combat obesity
a. Involve students in the planning and maintenance of our vegetable garden through the integration of garden harvest into the ProStart cooking class. Recipe development, taste tastings and cooking demonstrations will be utilized to promote vegetable intake.
1. Promote working with diverse groups
a. Student population is 35%Hispanic, 39% African American. All students are welcome to work in the garden and receive Community Service hours.
2. Promote life and work skills for SPED students
a. Teachers for SPED students will direct students in gardening and upkeep and be the “garden keepers”
