About the Program:

Cape Cod Hill School’s garden goal is to secure multiple titles and copies non-fiction agricultural books for various reading levels. This will supplement the existing “Book Nook”. The “Book Nook” is a resource for classroom teachers and interventionists to develop educational lessons. This resource increases interdisciplinary connections in our school community. Students will apply and transfer skills taught using literary, scientific, artistic, historic and creative aspects of gardening. This goal meets the school’s vision: “Expanding the mind, Encouraging the heart, and Creating community”.
The community goal is met by donating surplus produce to area food closets and available to the school community. Student will use the school lunch menu and student choice to drive the selection of seed purchases. The result is to increase confidence, motivation, autonomy, and performance of young readers. Being able to give students a choice in their reading helps them successfully enjoy the educational experience. Students will have the power to choose their own "just right" book. This is a skill that will last a lifetime.
The ultimate goal is for students to transfer this positive attitude toward reading to other subject areas. We hope to maintain an awareness of our strong agricultural heritage that is already a part of Franklin County. The increased visibility of CSAs, farmers’ markets, locally identified produce in grocery stores and restaurants places value on the “Get Real, Get Maine” movement year round. We value the importance of and want our student to know the impact of their agricultural heritage in order for them to self-engage and perpetuate this ideal.
