About the Program:

Hart Middle School is located in Ward 8 in Washington, DC, the poorest ward in the nation's capital, and in a community where fresh food is scarce and rarely an option. The school has also struggled with both attendance and testing scores. With this new garden initiative, we aim to better engage students in school classes and activities related to the garden and provide them with a hands-on learning experience, particularly for our special education and autistic classes. This garden project will not only bring children and the community closer to the food that they eat, but it will also bring life and excitement into the school environment which will be translated into more school involvement, both from the students and the community.
