Memorial Middle School
Our entire school garden is utilized as an educational tool. The garden is used directly with the Family and Consumer Sciences classes and serves 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students at Memorial Middle School. Produce used in the Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) classrooms allow students to learn to prepare vegetables, the importance of nutrition, and how their food choices will affect their health.
Garden Club students start all seeds at school and learn about the growing process from seed to table. Students tend and care for the garden through the entire growing season and learn plant identification, edible parts, and how to use vegetables in recipes. The Garden Club sells surplus produce in the fall to students and families, developing a business sense, and share what they have learned through the growing process. Garden Club participants take seasonal produce to share with their families. Each week produce was donated to the School Backpack Program that provides food to qualifying families on the weekend.
