Island Montessori Charter School
Gardening is an essential piece of the Montessori method, where interacting with the natural world and the community is integrated throughout the curriculum. Students learn by exploring hands-on materials and real-life experiences. The garden will show students self discipline and social responsibility by allowing them to be responsible for its care, teaching farm-to-table concepts and sustainability, and by giving back to the community through donations and education. This brand-new garden will be the starting point for future goals of a greenhouse, beehive program, and chicken coops.
Students, teachers, and parents cannot wait to add a garden program to our 1 year-old school! Last month, students in a mixed 4-6th grade class showed they were going to take things into their own hands. They wanted to start a garden outside their door, despite having few resources and no tools. They showed up the next week with tools borrowed from parents and started digging at recess! (see picture)
