About the Program:

The Gledhill school vegetable garden is maintained by parents and school staff. Last year the garden, located in the common area at the rear of the school, was used by about forty students in two classrooms. Gledhill staff, with support from the Gledhill School Council, are looking to grow student involvement annually.

Our long term goal is to build a high-yield urban food garden for school and community use. The short-term goal, which will be realized if Gledhill receives this grant, is to add gardens to the front of the school where a small native plant garden already exists, allowing student involvement to increase by approximately forty students in 2015. The garden will beautify the school and community, and continue to provide practical gardening experience and health education to city children who may not have other opportunities to enjoy a vegetable garden. Vegetables that are not used in the classroom will be donated to the school’s breakfast program and a local food bank.
