About the Program:

The goals of our school garden are to provide our students with the experience of planning, creating, planting, maintaining and harvesting their own vegetables as well provide them a “real life” activity to learn and practice science, health and mathematics skills and concepts. The grant will also provide an opportunity to involve members of the community through garden volunteers. Food produced by the garden and not consumed by the students will be donated to the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church food pantry to distribute to the needy in the community, which will allow the students to experience the skill of compassion for those in need.
The garden will be maintained by the students. During summer vacation, the garden will be maintained by rising eighth grade students as part of their community service requirements.
Members of the Alice Applewhite Garden Club and the Peninsula Council of Garden Clubs will serve as advisers in the garden development. A staff member who is a master gardener will be an advisor.
