About the Program:

Audubon Charter School's garden was severely damaged by Hurricane Isaac in 2012. Several garden beds were bordered with untreated wood that did not hold up during intense rains. We now have only three functioning beds, and the wood borders are disintegrating. We seek to replace the damaged beds, integrate garden activities into our curriculum and educate students in Pre-K through 3rd grade about growing healthy foods and living fit lifestyles. Garden-based learning is an excellent fit with our unique Montessori and French programs. Children in our Montessori program are instructed by teachers who direct self-motivated learning and exploration based on each child's individual development, and the founder of Montessori advocated garden education. French students are taught the French curriculum by native French-speaking teachers, and classes, including math and science, are taught in French. School food gardens have a long history in France, going back to the 19th century.
