About the Program:

With D.U.E. Season Charter School's garden, we seek to engage students in multiple areas that will create a healthy nutrition environment and foster improved student health. We believe that in doing so, this early learning experience in the garden will create positive relationships between healthy food and children. This school garden project will enhance a program that will provide nutrition education and sustainable agricultural practices. Through this outdoor classroom, students will be able to take away a number of important lessons from subjects that they would normally learn indoors. These subjects include science, art, English, math, health and nutrition.
If selected, this grant from Whole Kids Foundation will provide a huge financial support in a project to benefit the teachers, students, and community. The grant will be able to finance garden expansion- construction materials, soil amendments, seeds and plants, and watering tools. This grant will also finance materials for classroom activities.
Within the next few weeks, a garden and cooking club will be created for any students interested in D.U.E. Season Charter School. Alexis Sangalang, the garden coordinator, is the facilitator for this club. Activities of this club will include starting a container garden by planting crops that will sustain over the winter, observing the growth of these crops, cooking, learning about our food systems, and more. Students will be able to explore healthy foods and garden practices that they will be able to take home to their families.
