East Somerville Community School
We are starting our garden from scratch after a devastating fire severely damaged our school in December 2007. The old garden was destroyed along with much of the building. After nearly six long years of rebuilding, the school finally reopened this September. Our goal is multifaceted: to reestablish the garden as a curriculum tool, to involve children in the gardening process so they learn firsthand where food comes from and that the outdoors can be fun, to grow food that the children can eat for snacks, and to provide a green space in a part of Somerville that has very few parks or even lawns and trees.
This grant will allow us to buy plants, organic fertilizer, mulch, a compost bin, gardening tools, an automatic watering system, and any other supplies that we need as the garden grows.
