About the Program:

The goal of the Silver Star Community Garden is to bring people together in a shared activity that raises awareness about healthy food and healthy communities. At the classroom level students will benefit from working with other students and adults in a shared activity that teaches not only about plants, but also about life. Students will learn about natural life cycles, nurturing living things, and the many resources that diverse communities have. Furthermore, since students were instrumental in advocating for this garden their agency and identity as community citizens will be strengthened. We will continue to include students as active partners in decision making and fund raising because this project is really their project. There will also be many benefits for community members. The Silver Star Community is very diverse and is comprised of families with rich cultural traditions in gardening. We anticipate that this will give diverse families a chance to connect with the wider community. Additionally, the community will benefit from a greater awareness about healthy food and lifestyle. The Silver Star Community Garden has the lofty goals of bringing together our community and raising awareness about healthy lifestyle, but through diligence and patience we know that these goals can be achieved.
